In Essex the Green belt has so far halted the urban spread of London, although Basildon and Harlow were originally developed to resettle Londoners after the property damage caused by the last war.
Essex lies east of London and therefore, being commuter belt, a lot of working people have jobs in the City of London.
Essex is probably unfairly well known for the Essex Girl jokes ( and the Essex man )
Essex has an international airport in Stansted and both the M11 and M25 cross the county.
The Lakeside retail park, in the south of Essex and bordering on the banks of the river Thames, was one of the earlier out-of-town shopping centres built in the UK.
Industry is mainly to the south of the county. Harlow is known for its electronics, pharmacutical and science research companies. Brentwood has the head office of Ford motor Company.
Agriculture is still important, particularly in the north of Essex, however large numbers of jobs and careers in Essex will be found in the light engineering and of course the booming service industries.
