Role Overview 🔎

Are you eager to shape the future of legal technology? As a Legal Engineer at Orbital Witness, you'll play a critical role in the development of our AI-powered legal assistant, Orbital Copilot, specifically designed to transform property law. Launched just under six months ago, Orbital Copilot has rapidly made significant strides, thanks to being at the forefront of applying Large Language Models (LLM’s) within the legal sector. This innovation has not only set us apart as early leaders, but has also tapped into the growing realisation across the legal industry about the indispensable role of AI. At Orbital Witness, the company known for pioneering legal tech solutions used by many of the UK’s top law firms, you'll have the unique opportunity to work with cutting-edge Generative AI technology, improving the efficiency and accessibility of legal services in the property industry.

You’ll get a chance to: 👩‍💻 👨‍💻

Own the end-to-end automation of specific legal topic areas and will be required to drive their success. You’ll be joining a dynamic legal team of 7 people, working in a fast-paced start-up and contributing to a wide range of activities to help shape the direction of the products we’re building.

The team focuses specifically on speed of execution, quantifiable impact and daily collaboration.  You’ll be involved in every stage of product development, from ideas, to research and development, and from prompt engineering, to quality-checked output.  Our Legal Engineers act as first line customer experts, often joining sales and customer success calls.  You'll be supported by a team of highly experienced lawyers with varied backgrounds in property law, having worked at prestigious businesses such as Dentons, Pinsent Masons & Farewill, as well as a highly competent team of engineers and data scientists.

Once onboarded you will be expected to contribute significantly to our projects's successes. This is a difficult challenge but very rewarding since the product we're building has the potential to make a very real difference in how real estate is transacted, in the UK and across the globe.

You should apply if: ✍️

  • Have a demonstrable track record working with commercial real estate transactions, specifically conveying land and leasehold transactions.
  • Ideally, you will have 5 years of post-qualification experience, but do not be put off applying if you can demonstrate exceptional knowledge of real estate transactions and have less than 5 years!
  • You are able to break down standard real estate due diligence work into discrete tasks according to our in-house process so that an AI system can understand those tasks.
  • Are highly computer literate and not intimidated by technical challenges. You should be curious about how technology works and should have examples of how you've explored technology in the past.
  • Are interested in AI and software engineering, specifically the developments in large language models (LLMs) and the capabilities of the latest AI products.
  • You have never done this specific job or type of work before (because very few people have) but you are curious, hard working and intelligent and would like to begin a career in LegalTech

It would also be nice if you:

  • Have any experience in the following areas:
    • Construction, particularly relating to the detail of the appointment of the professional team and the ‘usual’ suite of documents that entails, and the content of those documents.
    • Planning, particularly the content of planning agreements, conditions and what might be considered ‘usual’ and/or ‘onerous’ conditions, the Use Classes Order, local authority searches, and planning aspects of the CLLS Certificate of Title.
    • Other jurisdictions, particularly the US and/or Australia.
  • Are familiar with LegalTech software within a law firm preferably working with or managing a team of people who interact with AI.
  • Have dabbled with any programming, no-code tools, software integrations/plugins or complex SaaS tools for work or personal use hobbies.

Benefits

  • Competitive starting salary of £70k - £100k DOE
  • Matched pension contributions
  • Equity options in a fast growing start-up
  • Flexible working hours and location; should you choose to work from home or need a change of scenery for a few days you will have access to offices in The Boutique Workplace Company, in and around London
  • 25 days paid holiday (plus bank holidays)
  • Professional equipment and personal development budget along with training opportunities to learn and develop your skills
  • Cycle-to-work scheme
  • An inclusive community enjoying all-company off-sites, lunches and socials
  • Spill - an all-in-one mental health support app through Slack

💡 We value diversity at Orbital Witness, and would particularly encourage applications from those who are traditionally underrepresented in tech. We’d love to hear from you even if you don’t match all of the above criteria or are seeking other opportunities that we’re not currently advertising.
